Most Able Provision

We support our scholars throughout their time with us, knowing that they may have aspirations to apply for top universities, degree apprenticeships and highly competitive courses such as Medicine. As of this, we offer:

  • Excellent support for scholars.
  • Individual support for Oxbridge applicants.
  • Super-curricular opportunities to aid in a successful application to Oxford, Cambridge or other top Russel Group universities.
  • In Year 13, we offer support for Admissions Tests and have extensive experience of delivering high quality practice interviews, which we hone each year based on feedback from our applicants.

EPQ

At Longsands Sixth Form, we actively support scholars who wish to complete the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) example questions:

  • To what extent was Stalin the greatest reformer in Russia during the period between 1855 and 1964?
  • To What Extent is a Psychopaths’ Behaviour out of Our Control?
  • What is the future?
  • Is Dementia an ever-growing problem in an ever-aging society?
  • To what extent is the insanity plea effective and appropriate as a legal defence?
  • Why do Paralympic long jumpers take off on their prosthetic leg?
  • To What Extent was it the Correct Decision to Keep Tiered Examinations To Accurately Differentiate Students Achievement in Mathematics?
  • To what extent was the one child policy in China (1979-2016) a success and should it be implemented across the world today?
  • To what extent was the United States justified in using the atomic bomb in 1945 for ending the war?
  • What effect is loneliness having on our society?

The EPQ can be completed on a topic of the scholars’ choosing and is excellent preparation for degree level study as it allows them to develop research and writing skills that are invaluable in higher education.

This year, we handed out special congratulations to Skye M who achieved an A* with her brilliant project titled “Could de-extinction of the Woolly Mammoth be a viable solution to mitigate climate change?“

Wellbeing

The pressure of studying for your Sixth Form courses can sometimes reach levels where you feel that the stress and anxiety become unmanageable. People experience the physical and mental effects of stressful situations when they feel that they cannot cope with demands that are being placed on them. Sixth Form courses are very demanding and at times even the most hard-working scholar can feel that their course is placing too much of a burden on them.

If you feel that the pressure of Sixth Form study is affecting you in any way, please do not hesitate to come and have a chat. There is a wide range of support that we can offer from within the Sixth Form team and we also have contacts with various external support agencies who can offer help and guidance.

Perhaps the most important advice is to be organised, to manage your time effectively, and to ask for help as soon as you need it.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

People you can ask for support

Every member of staff is here to help you succeed – not just in your studies, but in all aspects of Sixth Form life.

Whether you have a question, a concern, or just need someone to listen, you can turn to any member of Longsands staff. We’re all committed to helping you feel supported, confident, and prepared for the future.
