A £700,000 refurbishment project is under way to transform a sixth form centre in St Neots.

Astrea Academy Trust is upgrading Longsands Academy’s post-16 facilities, with plans to create a “modern, university-style purpose-built space” for students.

The updated centre will include a café, new study areas, and a common room, alongside space for community use on the ground floor.

Francis Bray, executive principal at Longsands Academy, said: “I am delighted that work has started on our building project and would like to thank Ian Sollom MP very much for supporting the project.

“The investment will create a transformed, modern sixth form centre that our students truly deserve.

“I am looking forward to seeing students using the new space next term, which will be a fantastic place for young people to study, socialise and prepare for their future.”

Ian Sollom MP recently visited the school as construction began.

The plans follow similar upgrades at St Ivo Academy in St Ives, completed last year and also funded by the Astrea Academy Trust.

Rowena Hackwood, CEO of Astrea Academy Trust, said: “I am very pleased that Astrea are able to finance the upgrade of Longsands’ facilities and to revitalise the Sixth Form so that it gives excellent provision for our students, now and in the future.”

The sixth form centre is housed in a separate building on the main campus.

The refurbishment is part of a larger £1 million improvement programme at Longsands Academy, which also includes upgrades to the reception, staff room, admin offices and bathroom facilities.

Work will be carried out in phases and is scheduled for completion by September 2026.
