KS4 History

Years 10 – 11

History is a very popular option at Key Stage 4. History GCSE is currently changing. Groups sitting examinations in 2016 and 2017 are currently studying OCR  History B which includes the Germany 1918-45, International Relations 1945-1975, British Society 1890-1918 and a Controlled Assessment based on USA 1919-1941. This course will cease to be examined from 2017 from 2016 we will start teaching a new GCSE accredited by Edexcel. These topics include Medicine Through Time, Elizabethan England, The Cold War and Germany 1918-1939.

The current GCSE History course at Longsands follows the OCR Modern World B Specification. It is examined by two exam papers and a controlled assessment.

Paper One is worth 45%. Pupils study an aspect of international relations, between 1945 and 1975, and a depth study focusing on Germany during the period 1918-45.
Paper Two is a British Depth study focusing on students’ source analysis skills. They will look at the nature, provenance, reliability, usefulness and trustworthiness of a range of sources on the topic of British society, 1890-1918.
The final 25% of the grade is a Controlled Assessment on USA, 1919-1941; this is designed to assess students’ source skills and will take to form of a 2500 word essay.
