CEIAG (Careers education, information, advice and guidance) & Work Experience
We encourage all students at Longsands to develop high aspirations and consider a broad and ambitious range of careers. We use contacts with the world of work and further education to help them understand where different choices can take them in the future.
We have a clear careers framework in place which is linked to outcomes for pupils – please refer to the Careers Framework document.
In Year 9 students use careers guidance software during PSHE lessons to identify career pathways and to help them decide on their options choices.
They receive information, advice and guidance from all options subject teachers and all students are given the opportunity to speak to a member of staff about their choices.
In Year 10 all students have the opportunity to undertake a 1 week work placement. During LLW (Learning for Life and Work) lessons, in the term before, students are given the opportunity to use careers education software to identify suitable placements. They also receive tuition on how to write a letter of application, how to conduct themselves at interview and how to construct a CV. All students are offered a mock interview in November.
In year 11 students are made aware of available opportunities in the local area. Apprenticeship information is shared via tutors, course information from local providers is shared and students have the opportunity within LLW to research their chosen career. All year 11 students are interviewed early in the spring term to ensure they have a clear plan for post 16, this allows us to ensure that students are supported as they move on to the next stage of education whether it is with us or elsewhere.
The Government has raised the participation age (RPA) so that all young people in England are now required to continue in education or training beyond the age of 16. They are NOT required to stay in school; they can choose how to participate which might be through:
- Full time study in a school, college or training provider;
- An apprenticeship or traineeship;
- Full time work or volunteering (20 hours or more) combined with part time accredited study.
The CEIAG curriculum is supported by a range of activities that seek to inspire young people, including employer talks, careers fairs and mock interviews.
